No unvaccinated players at Australian Open, says Victoria state Premier

The Victorian premier, Daniel Andrews, has joined the growing chorus of voices calling for stricter rules on what vaccinations all players on tour should be taking, including the Australian Open.

“I will write to the global tennis bodies today making them aware of my concerns,” he told Triple M on Thursday.

“I have already been discussing this with the Australian Open and they will look at their other tournaments and hopefully something will come out of it.”

The Coalition for the Protection of Australian Food Standards is also pushing for players to be covered by mandatory vaccination programs.

Federal MPs and prominent sporting figures have in recent days renewed calls for tighter measures as health experts warn that the measles outbreak at the 2017 Australian Open remains a serious risk to young children.

The outbreak came to the fore after Shane Warne slipped during a foul-mouthed tussle with a fan in the Australian Open stands in January.

A World Health Organisation measles outbreak map shows at least 85 outbreaks and seven cases in other countries are being linked to Australia, with more than 300 cases of measles in the past five months.

Measles is highly contagious and spreads in close quarters, such as airports, trains and airplanes.
